TANGEDCO Net Metering FAQ: Everything You Need to Know

Complete guide to net metering in Tamil Nadu: application, approval, billing, and credits for solar rooftop systems.

TANGEDCO net metering FAQ Tamil Nadu

What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a billing mechanism where solar users can export excess generation to the TANGEDCO grid. The exported units are credited against consumption, effectively "spinning the meter backward." You only pay for net consumption (consumption minus generation).

Application Process

  1. Submit application: To TANGEDCO with consumer number, system capacity, site photos, and single-line diagram (SLD)
  2. Feasibility check: TANGEDCO reviews sanctioned load and grid capacity
  3. Site inspection: TANGEDCO engineer inspects installation and safety measures
  4. Approval: Agreement issued with terms and interconnection clearance
  5. Meter installation: Bidirectional meter replaces existing meter (free for residential up to certain capacity)
  6. Commissioning: System synchronized with grid; billing starts with net metering

Approval Timeline

  • Application submission: Day 1
  • Feasibility + inspection: Day 5-10
  • Approval letter: Day 7-15
  • Meter installation: Day 15-22
  • Total timeline: Typically 2-3 weeks from application

Billing & Credits

  • Billing cycle remains monthly as per existing account
  • Excess generation is credited at your consumption tariff rate
  • Credits can be carried forward within the financial year (April to March)
  • End-of-year surplus may be settled per TNERC regulations (check current policy)
  • Fixed charges and taxes apply regardless of net consumption

System Size Limits

  • Residential: Typically up to sanctioned load or 1MW, whichever is lower
  • Commercial/Industrial: Up to sanctioned load; consult TANGEDCO for >500kW
  • Agricultural: Standalone solar pumps may not require net metering; rooftop systems follow standard limits

Required Documents

  • Latest TANGEDCO electricity bill
  • Property ownership proof (sale deed, pattadar passbook, or tax receipt)
  • Aadhaar card and photograph
  • System single-line diagram (SLD) with inverter/panel specs
  • Site layout showing panel mounting and inverter location
  • MNRE subsidy approval letter (if applicable)
